Dear Harlan: I have been seeing someone for three months now, and I really like him. Unfortunately, he still has a year of school left, and I am moving two and a half hours away. He doesn’t have a car, as he can’t afford one right now with school payments. He has little to no financial support and works very hard to be successful. I’m worried that a long-distance relationship will be too much for both of us, with me starting a new full-time job for the first time and him working 30-plus hours a week while going to school full time. He is adamant about making it work, but with me doing all the driving and the time constraints, I feel less than optimistic. Should I continue to pursue this? Should I end it now? Take a break? – Breaking
Dear Breaking: Stop it — you want to date other guys. Admit it. It’s obvious. I mean, if your boyfriend is willing to do whatever it takes to make it work, why not see what happens? There’s nothing to lose. If it doesn’t work out, you’ll be single again. If it works out, you’ll have an even better relationship. But none of this matters because you’re not willing or interested in doing the work needed to make a long distance relationship work.
