Hey Harlan: I recently revealed my feelings for a friend and colleague. She wasn’t interested in being more than friends at the time, but I’m hoping this will change. I’m flying from where I am at work in Minnesota, to where she lives in New York. She invited me and the friend I’ll be traveling with to stay with her. We talk every day (we work together) and still maintain a great professional and personal relationship. I know we’ve both said that we love each other as friends, but the romantic in me and the whole flying across the country circumstances, are leading me to believe that this weekend could be something special, or even another heartbreak situation. Any tips on how I can manage my expectations? – Flying High
Dear Flying: Lose the third wheel. If there’s going to be any chance of romance, it’s not going to be a threesome. Ask your friend to make plans one day and night. Other than getting alone time, plan the best day possible. Do something you’ve always wanted to do, but do it with her. Have an absurd amount of fun doing something you’ll love doing that doesn’t depend on her. Bike around Central Park, rent a paddle boat, go to a baseball game. Then, see if romance pops up. Your goal is to have an amazing time. Showing her that you’re comfortable being together after getting rejected makes you look wildly confident, extremely interesting, and more attractive than ever.
